To maximize my time riding in the mountains and skip the 30 km of flat (boring) section, I opted to drive to Kirrweiler. It is a little town not far from Kalmit. (See my previous blog)
I parked in Kirrweiler, took the bike and I headed to the mountains while heading south-west.
When I started to climb on the mountain, the road become narrower and I feel like I’m the only out there, but I met other cyclists further up. 🙂
After the first descent and passing a few villages, I noticed that castle high on top of the mountain. (I will get back to this later in this blog.)
I found, in the charming village of Annweiler, this little river which is crossing the old town.
Here is the main place of Anweiler. It is surrounded by a few nice Restaurants.
Just outside of Anweiler, there are indications for the Castle I saw earlier. It is a 6.4km climbs to Trifels Castle.
Some nice tree sections on the way up.
This is as close as I can get to the Trifels castle, with a road bike. 🙂
I then continued my way through the mountains, from a village to another. Here one 700 years old.
I’m always surprised by the hidden bike path, the GPS can bring me on… with apparently no other roads nearby.
After a few sections on the roads going down from the mountains (faster than the bike path), I arrived in the valley in the village of Klingenmünster. From there, I followed the Germany Wine road toward the North by following the base of the mountains. I quickly lost count of the wine productors on my path as there were so many.
Here a very nice view on the valley. I’m heading to the mountains we can see in the background on the right. These must be 35 or 40km away.
A few nice villages I crossed on the way back.
After every little climbs, we have another chance to get some speed while going down.
80km total.
